BCL6 Protein Definition

BCL6 protein is may be a transcription factor and contains six zinc finger motifs and shares an N-terminal POZ domain homologous to other transcription factors. BCL6 protein is predominantly expressed in the B-cell lineage and found in mature B cells. BCL6 is expressed in germinal centers, including all centroblasts and centrocytes. BCL6 is present in DNA-binding complexes and can repress transcription and its activity is dependent upon DNA-binding and on the N-terminal region containing the POZ motif. Target genes have roles in B-cell activation (CD69, CD44, EBI2, ID2, LEU13, and STAT1), B-cell differentiation (BLIMP1, CD10, AMYB, BCL7A, CD19, and CD20), inflammation (MIP1A, IP10, and CXCR4), and cell cycle control (p27(KIP1) and cyclin D2). Expression of BCL6 in some B-cells early in the antigen response may skew them toward a germinal center fate, away from a plasma cell fate. (from OMIM 109565 and NCI)
