Lente Insulin Definition

A long-acting crystalline insulin often used in combination with a short-acting insulin in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. This type of insulin may be derived from porcine or recombinant sources. Administered once daily, insulin Lente starts to lower blood glucose within 1 to 3 hours after injection and exerts its peak effect 7 to 15 hours after injection. Endogenous human insulin, a pancreatic hormone composed of two polypeptide chains, is important for the normal metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats; it has anabolic effects on many types of tissues.
