Parenteral Dosage Form Definition

A dosage form designed for administration not through the alimentary canal but rather by injection through some other route, such as subcutaneous, intramuscular, intraorbital, intracapsular, intraspinal, intrasternal, or intravenous. Formulations for parenteral administration include solutions, emulsions, suspensions, lyophilized formulations and sustained-release dosage forms. Common excipients used in parenteral formulations include: solvents and co-solvents; solubilizing, wetting, suspending, emulsifying or thickening agents; chelating agents; antioxidants and reducing agents; antimicrobial preservatives; buffers and pH adjusting agents and bulking agent, protectants and tonicity adjusters.
